About Me

Hi! i'm Dan. This is my homepage.  I'm an engineer. (mostly)

About My Homepage

Online since 1993, my homepage retains many of the cutting edge stylistic elements of that era. Some of the vintage content remains surprisingly popular as well, despite being a considerable embarrassment to me.

More About Me

Dan's Fractal Art Gallery. Original artworks.

Dan's Projects. Original projects.

Dan's Software Collection. Original code.

Dan's Photo Album. Original photos.

Dan's Blog. Lacking originality, for sure.

Windsurfing and Kiteboarding in RI. Lots of info, directions, etc., on places to windsurf and kiteboard around RI.

Kite Control Bar experiments. For Kiteboarding.

Other current involvements:

Dan's truffle recipe #1.

Technote on making your own Solder Paste Stencils for PCB assembly.

Technote on using the MITERS AeroTech CNC machining system.

The family game of Number Scrabble.

Really Old Stuff (yet still popular)

Instructions for building your own Home-Brew Anemometer (wind-speed meter).

FracXtra, a huge pack of extras files for the Fractint fractal creation program. There are versions of Fractint for UNIX, DOS, and Windows. Fractint is the best fractal creation program available on any platform.

AniCurs v5, a huge package of animated cursors for Windows NT and Windows 95. I made at least 50 of these cursors myself, the rest are collected from sources on the net.

Dan's Wordlist / Dictionary collection. This has four different large wordlists of the english language, together, and separated by word length. This is very handy for word puzzles and such. Also here is a Master Short-Wordlist, which is a consolidation of the other 4 wordlists, but only 2-8 letter words. Also here are some wordlist manipulation utilities I wrote (C source code).

Scanner Grotesques! To make your own scanner grotesque, find a full-page scanner, lift up the cover, and scan various body parts, moving those parts during the scan. I guess if you wanted you could put something else under there and move it around during the scan, but it is much more grotesque if you do it with parts of your body. More fun, too. Grotesques: bosch.jpg , dan5.jpg , dan6.jpg , eli1.jpg , eye.jpg ,gargoyle.jpg , s10.jpg , s2.jpg , s21.jpg , s5.jpg , s9.jpg , sh12.jpg.

Vital Stats

I am a carbon-based life form composed of a single body which is 5'9" tall and weighs 135lb. my body has a head, two arms and two legs, all connected to a central torso. the torso is 37" around at the chest, 30" at the waist, and 36" at the hips. my head is connected to the body via a neck of 14" circumference. the head itself has a circumference of 22-1/2", and is coated with dark brown wavy hair which has to be kept short or it becomes a jumble. my head also has two brown eyes, the right one has vision of 20/100 and the left 20/70. each of my two arms are 10-1/2" around when flacid, and have 19" inseam. each arm has a hand at its terminus, each hand containing 5 fingers. the hands are 8" around the palm with a 9" finger span. my legs are of similar design to my arms, but with different measurements. they are 21" around with 30" inseam and size 9A feet, each foot containing 5 toes. here are the measurements of various remaining parts of my body: 3", 4-1'/2", 9", 1-1/4", 2", 12-1/2", 8-1/2". you can probably figure out which parts those measurements correspond to. anyway, just let me know if there's something i forgot to tell you about (fold, briefs, morning, right, yes).

Hmm, here is a nice little story about what I was doing on August 14, 1997.  My sister wrote this.   Some background info:  We were on vacation in Pagosa Springs, Colorado.  My first vacation with the family in a couple years, boy did I have a bunch of fun!

Dvorak

When I was in junior-high, we all had to take a typing class.  I of course rebelled by refusing the standard QWERTY keyboard, and instead learning the Dvorak keyboard.  These days, it is easy to set up the key layout to Dvorak on Windows and Unix.  On Unix there are several ways to do it, I usually use xmodmap files for dvorak.  Back when I started with Dvorak, the only way to switch was to get special keyboard hardware.

So I bet you're saying to yourself, "gee dan, i've got a bunch of unix machines kicking about the front yard. can you help?" well, have i got an idea for you. of course you've already tried my SuperPool, (we know how exciting it is...). so anyway, the bugger you want is xpilot. It's a multiplayer space arcade game - think Asteroids.  Another classic i recently rediscovered is Nethack, which I had last played in 1989.  It's still under development however, and has gotten a bit more interesting.

My mom has a web page too.

A classic, here is my Geek Code (as of 1994!)
